With all their off-stage antics, it would be all too easy to forget that Smashing Pumpkins really was one of the great Alt-Rock bands of the 90s. And with Billy Corgan's star shining so bright it would be easy to forget that they were even a band. By the time 1979 came out in 1996, it could easily have been lost to many. MTV was already on the slide into reality TV, while the UK had stopped looking to the US for its tunes for a while. But that didn't stop 1979 being a trippy slice of alternative rock that somehow managed to simultaneously sound both fresh and nostalgic - and this was in no small part down to the cracking video that inspired our "Proud parents of a D student" T-shirt.
