Even though Money For Nothing was playing EVERYWHERE in the mid-80s, the young me managed to totally miss the hoohaa that this section of the song caused. First Floor was the pop band in the music video that Money For Nothing's central character called a "faggot with the earring and the make-up". Was it just a different time? Was it, as Mark Knopfler attested, fair use of the lyric as it was sung in character? I'm not sure, but one thing is for sure, when this hit our stereos and screens, Dire Straits were the biggest band on the planet.
